Social media platforms circulated leaked footage on Tuesday from a private clinic known as “Tulip” in the Libyan capital, Tripoli, showing a child’s body preserved in a freezer and human remains inside a freezer. The circulating footage sparked widespread anger and outrage among the public. Shared images also showed the clinic being cordoned off and temporarily closed after security forces raided the facility following the spread of the videos. According to the statement, the body shown in the videos belonged to a newborn who died during childbirth to a mother of African nationality, and the child’s father refused to collect the body after being officially informed of the death. The clinic also explained that the other human remains belonged to medically justified amputations carried out for legitimate health reasons, such as gangrene or accidents.
