Distracted driver who killed cyclist gets licence back

A distracted driver who admitted hitting and killing a cyclist north of Wellington has received his licence back for work purposes. Wong’s vehicle struck Brent Norriss’ bike on State Highway 2 near Horokiwi while Norriss was riding to Petone on February 3, 2020. On Friday, Wong’s lawyer Chris Nicholls made an application for a limited driver licence for his client at the same court where he was sentenced. Wellington District Court Judge Peter Butler said while the accident was tragic, the family’s feelings could not influence the application in any way. Nicholls said one of the conditions of the limited licence would be that any cellphone Wong had must be turned off.
