The South African National Energy Association (SANEA) launched a South African Energy Skills Roadmap in late 2022 to promote the country’s just energy transition. The SANEA energy skills roadmap identifies key global trends, including technology drivers such as renewable energy, hydrogen and other clean molecules, energy storage and smart technologies. Wellman echoed the Energy Skills Roadmap findings when she spoke about the concept of transversal skills, which different industries can apply. “When we ask the industry what skills you need, that idea – marketing and selling electricity – is not what they identify. “Youth often rely on these programmes for an income and never actually enter the employment sector.
