Double-dip recession begins as economy plunges 2.6% thanks to lockdown


The Office for National Statistics said UK gross domestic product at the end of November was 8.5% below its pre-pandemic peak. These four sectors accounted for nearly 80% of the fall in the all-important services sector. The services sector is now 9.9% below where it was in February 2020, before the pandemic hit the UK. British Chambers of Commerce economics chief Suren Thiru said: “The latest figures highlight the continued damage being done to the UK economy by coronavirus. “Labour’s priorities would be the priorities of the British people: securing our economy, protecting our NHS and rebuilding our country."
