A consolation victory for Australia with the series already lost, but a valuable one as they held off the home team to retain their position as the world’s No 1-ranked side in this format. England, without Eoin Morgan and Jos Buttler (as well as Jason Roy and Ben Stokes) just never looked like scoring enough runs and Australia, despite some jitters against the quite brilliant Adil Rashid on a pitch being used for the third time, just about got home with three balls to spare thanks to an unbeaten 39 from Mitchell Marsh. His innings was poised and powerful until the last over when, with one needed to win, he played out two dot balls and could have been run-out from the winning run.
