Dan Day had left his car in the South Beach area of Blyth and got a taxi with friends to Monkseaton, where he spent timing drinking and enjoying the football game. Moments later, Day crashed into railings at the side of the road on the A193. He left his car at South Beach and got a taxi. He then got a taxi back to South Beach where his car was. "He had further drinks in South Beach and, for some reason that he can't explain, he gave someone a lift.
