Dublin Customs House burnt

From The Times: May 26, 1921As I write, O’Connell Bridge and the quays of Dublin are crowded with spectators of the burning of the Dublin Customs House. This beautiful building, designed by James Gandon at the end of the 18th century, was one of the sights of Dublin, and its fine dome was a landmark for all ships entering the Liffey. It was destroyed today by the Republican Army. The dome still stands, but the rest of the great building is wrapped in flames. It is feared that the destruction will be complete, and that the Customs House will share the fate which Gandon’s other building, the General Post Office, suffered in 1916.
