Kenya’s e-commerce providers are optimistic about the sector’s fortunes in the post-pandemic period, even as a new report shows a surge in online retail sales. The report notes that online retail sales grew sharply globally, with Korea reporting the highest share at 25.9 per cent in 2020, up from 20.8 per cent the year before. Global e-commerce sales jumped to Sh2,700 trillion ($26.7 trillion) in 2019, up to four per cent from 2018. She said digital tax might increase the cost of doing business and discourage many online shoppers. Cross-border business to consumer e-commerce amounted to Sh45 trillion ($440 billion) in 2019, a nine per cent increase over 2018.
