Former First Lady Mama Ngina Kenyatta has been recognised for the role she played in the establishment of the first East African Community. The East African Legislative Assembly (Eala) has honoured Mama Ngina alongside other first ladies at the time of East Africa's independence. Mama Ngina has also received an honorary doctorate degree in Entrepreneurship from the Jomo Kenyatta University of Agriculture and Technology. Last year, the “Living Legends” award was conferred on the country’s founding first lady by the African Women of Excellence Awards scheme. Mama Ngina has received many other distinguished awards.
