EC to give AAP MLAs personal hearings from July 14 in office-of-profit case

The MLAs said the post of parliamentary secretaries in Delhi do not come with any remuneration or trappings of power. In March last year, Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal had appointed the 21 MLAs as parliamentary secretaries to “assist” ministers of the Delhi government. The 21 members of the legislative assembly had sought a personal hearing after a lawyer petitioned the commission to disqualify them as MLAs are not allowed to hold an office of profit. New Delhi, Jun 27 (PTI): The Election Commission will give personal hearings from July 14 to the 21 Aam Aadmi Party lawmakers who stand to lose their assembly seats because they were appointed parliamentary secretaries, considered an office of profit. The AAP government then sought to get this legal sanction with retrospective effect by amending the Delhi Members of Legislative Assembly (Removal of Disqualification) Act, 1997.
