More officially, Forbes says that mentorship programs can increase skill development, increase job satisfaction, increase retention, improve career development, and improve performance.1Official mentorship programs provide a bit more structure than unofficial ones, not to say they are necessarily better for everyone or every situation. Mentorship programs need to have structure, but not be so rigid that they cannot be flexible to individual needs. The program needs an overarching mission and vision statement that guides its purpose; saying that we want to start a mentorship program is not enough. There are a few different formats for mentorship programs. Mentorship programs should not just involve communication from the mentor to the mentee, there should be a back-and-forth flow of information.
