EU proposals for new charges on heating and motoring fuels could force the dismantling of the carbon tax system just a year after the Government legislated for annual increases to 2030. Officials here are concerned that the new Brussels-controlled charging system would bring in less revenue than the carbon tax and remove national control over how the money is spent.
