Following the devastating floods which struck Sri Lanka in mid-May, the European Commission is providing €80,000 (close to Rs. 19.5 million) in humanitarian funding for emergency assistance. The funding is part of the EU’s overall contribution to the Disaster Relief Emergency Fund (DREF) of the International Federation of Red Cross and Red Crescent Societies (IFRC). The floods comes as Sri Lanka is struggling to cope with a third wave of the coronavirus pandemic. The Disaster Relief Emergency Fund was established in 1985 and is supported by contributions from donors.
