New early local elections in North Kosovo are the next step in defusing the crisis between Belgrade and Pristina, EU’s chief diplomat Josep Borrell said on Monday (26 June) as the EU welcomed the release of three kidnapped Kosovar policemen. “The next step is to make everything in order to call for elections,” EU’s chief diplomat Josep Borrell said after a meeting of EU foreign ministers in Luxembourg. In the meeting, EU foreign ministers were briefed by Borrell on the latest developments in the region. EU leaders are also expected to discuss Serbia-Kosovo tensions at their regular summit meeting on Thursday (29 June). “Failure to de-escalate the tensions will have negative consequences,” EU leaders are expected to stress.
