For proof of this we can start by looking at the middle class as a percentage of US population back in the 1970s compared to now. In the 1970s some 62% of American households were middle class. The article above is only one data point, and while if you check multiple sources they may disagree on the precise numbers, but all will agree on the trajectory: fewer American households are middle class than were 50 years ago.
