Editorial: Soda and food stamps tough to digest

According to the U.S. Department of Agriculture, which runs the Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (or the food stamps program known as SNAP), food stamp recipients spent 9.3 percent of their food stamp money on “sweetened beverages” in 2011 — “sweetened beverages” including pop and soda. Don’t SNAP at us, but we do not consider pop and soda to be “nutrition.”And taxpayers should not be footing the bill for this nonsensical food stamp expenditure. Those using taxpayer money are not afforded the same freedom, and nor should they be. There has to be requirements and restrictions, especially when the food stamp program rolls along at about $74 billion — money provided by taxpayers. Knowing that taxpayer money is spent on soda in the name of nutrition is tough to swallow.
