Edmonton Oilers seek ways to help homeless former Stanley Cup winner living in Ontario

EDMONTON—Oilers Entertainment Group have said that they’ve contacted the NHL Alumni Association regarding a now homeless former player who won a Stanley Cup with the team in 1990. Joe Murphy’s story came out on TSN in August as a 15-minute long emotional feature called “Finding Murph.”Mark Messier holds up the Stanley Cup that Joe Murphy helped win for the Edmonton Oilers in 1990. However, Tim Shipton, vice-president of communications with Oilers Entertainment Group said on Friday that through the Oilers’ own alumni association, they’ve contacted the NHL Alumni Association to figure out the best way to support Murphy. Coupled with mental health issues, the transition can be even harder, like in the case of Murphy, he said. “(Players) from time to time run into some challenges and certainly our alumni association and the NHL Alumni Association, we’re always there to support and we look at ways to support,” he said.
