Edmonton barber responds to racist vandalism by offering haircuts to cut hate

“I knew this doesn’t represent what Edmonton or Canada is about.”Chop Shop Barbershop owner Ahmad Akkashe and his son, Yahya, are photographed Dec. 11 inside the Edmonton shop, which was the target of racist vandalism. It’s why he’s holding a charitable hate awareness event this Sunday, offering hair cuts for donations, with proceeds going toward the John Humphrey Centre for Peace and Human Rights. Akkashe initially stumbled upon the racist and Islamophobic vandalism when he was with his 4-year-old son. He said he’s slowly teaching his son that hate never prevails, and it’s also an opportunity to further reinforce why their faith is important. He said he hopes people will come out the event to show that Edmontonians are united against acts of hate.
