Edmonton prof urges voters to put social health issues over economy

EDMONTON—A public health researcher is urging voters to consider social health determinants when casting their votes in this spring’s provincial election. University of Alberta School of Public Health assistant professor Roman Pabayo is giving a free lecture Thursday on social determinants of health. ( School of Public Health / University of Alberta )Pabayo said many of these determinants are tied to issues that come up at election time, like minimum wage, social programs, and women’s reproductive rights. Voters can also tend to put less weight on robust social programs than they do on economic issues, something he hopes to see change. The NDP has championed women’s reproductive rights, though abortion access remains scarce in rural Alberta.
