Egypt disburses EGP 18.5bn under social protection package since February: Finance minister

Ahmed Kouchouk, Egypt’s Minister of Finance, reviewed the implementation status of the government’s social protection package, noting that EGP 18.5bn has been disbursed since the programme was launched last February to support eligible beneficiaries and vulnerable groups. Kouchouk said that EGP 6bn has been allocated to provide an additional EGP 400 in cash support to 10 million households registered on ration cards. He added that another EGP 1.6bn has been directed toward additional cash assistance for beneficiaries of the Takaful and Karama programme, as well as recipients of the Child Allowance and rural female pioneers. According to the minister, EGP 3bn has also been earmarked to strengthen state-funded medical treatment programmes and help address critical cases currently on healthcare waiting lists. Kouchouk further noted that EGP 3.5bn has been allocated to the Egyptian Sugar and Integrated Industries Company to settle outstanding dues owed to sugarcane farmers.
