Early 2019 has seen far more migrants arriving in southern Spain than in previous winters, due in part to the western Mediterranean becoming the preferred route for those seeking entry into the EU and in part to the relatively calm conditions at sea in a period of prolonged fine weather. Meanwhile, ten more Africans were picked up at the Playa de Cortadura in the city of Cádiz after their boat ran aground just few metres from the spot where another had done the same last Wednesday. In the Costa Cálida, the Guardia Civil took into custody eight Algerians who made it to the Costa Cálida on Sunday morning, arriving at Punta de Negrete, at the western end of the regional park of Calblanque, at 12.50. Among them was one person aged under 18.
