Photo: MintNew Delhi: Six months after a parliamentary standing committee recommended it, the Election Commission of India has now told the law ministry that it supports the idea of simultaneous elections to the Lok Sabha and legislative assemblies. In December, chief election commissioner Nasim Zaidi supported the proposal saying holding general elections and state polls together would save money, time and energy. The law ministry had sought the EC’s views on the recommendation. Another EC official said that the challenge is significant because all political parties have to be on board to and pass a constitutional amendment to this effect. If the political parties agree to it, the idea can be taken further,’’ the second official added, asking not to be identified.
