Elephants damage crops in Gua Musang village, resulting in RM200,000 in losses

GUA MUSANG (Oct 3): Residents in Kampung Sungai Bayu Baru, here, claimed to have incurred almost RM200,000 in losses when their crops were damaged by three wild elephants that have been roaming around the village over the past two months. In the latest incident which happened early Saturday (Oct 2) morning, the villagers’ oil palm, coconut, durian and watermelon trees were damaged by the animals. The residents have also expressed worry when the elephants were frequently seen wandering around areas near their homes. Farmer, Mohd Faizul Isma Che Adam, 36, said he suffered huge losses because all his crops that were destroyed were already fruiting. “We were shocked to see our oil palm, coconut and banana trees destroyed by the elephants…many villagers are now afraid to go to their farms,” he told Bernama.
