Emergency operation underway to rescue trapped miner in WaihiSTEPHEN RUSSELL/FAIRFAX NZRescuers have been unable to contact a Waihi goldmine worker whose 50-tonne loader tipped upside down in a tunnel. While the rescue operation is underway, all mining activities in the area have stopped. There are several other mining operations in Waihi including the giant Martha open pit and the Favona and Trio underground mines. "We've got the great people from the Waihi volunteer fire brigade here and a helicopter on standby just as a precaution. The Correnso gold vein was discovered in 2009 and the mine is situation between 150 and 300 metres below residential properties in Waihi.
