ĐÀ NẴNG — The central city has chosen the red-shanked douc langur (Pygathryx nemaeus) as the official mascot of Đà Nẵng at the 2017 APEC (Asia-Pacific Economic Co-operation) Summit. According to Đà Nẵng City’s administration, the image of the endangered langur would make an impression among participants at the APEC, and communicate the city’s commitment on protecting the environment and building a ‘green city’ by 2025. At a meeting last year, the IUCN had agreed to list the red-shanked douc langur as critically endangered (CR) with unlimited protection status in the world. The Sơn Trà Nature Reserve is known for its rich biodiversity, with 287 species of animals and 985 species of plants. The city has approved the plan to protect biodiversity in Sơn Trà Nature Reserve towards 2030.
