Environment Canada issues weather warnings for Newfoundland and Labrador

Environment Canada has issued a slew of weather statements and storm warnings for Newfoundland and Labrador. Parts of eastern Labrador and northwestern Newfoundland can expect between 25 and 40 centimetres of snow starting Sunday morning, with potential for an additional 10 to 20 centimetres on Monday. The forecaster also says strong northeasterly winds are expected to develop on Sunday, gusting to between 70 km/h and 100 km/h in some areas and leading to reduced visibility. Heavy rain is also expected in southern Newfoundland, and Environment Canada says the frozen ground has a reduced ability to absorb the rainfall. Rain will begin Saturday night, and total amounts of up to 40 millimetres are expected before it tapers off Sunday evening.
