Environment Southland applies for global gravel consent on rivers

Environment Southland’s catchment division is in the process of applying for a global consent for gravel extraction, which may allow for gravel to be taken from rivers. Farmers must apply for resource consent, and consult with iwi, the Department of Conservation and Fish & Game to remove gravel from rivers. The report says if the consent is granted, it could allow gravel to be re-deposited to take pressure off areas such as inside bend build-ups. The catchment team has actively supported gravel applications for extraction in those areas. In terms of rock edge protection, 8842 tonnes has been placed between the Waikaia and Mataura Rivers, the report says.
