The Grand Ethiopian Renaissance Dam (GERD) is creating such an issue. Ethiopian authorities are insisting on building despite the opposition of Egypt who proposed that a third party should be involved to settle the matter. GERD, source of dispute between Ethiopia and EgyptGERD is a hydroelectric dam that aims at producing electricity. This project worries Egyptian authorities who rely largely on the Nile as their main source of water supply. To calm Egyptian fears, Ethiopia asserts that the dam will not be harmful to Egyptian agriculture and that it will not cause water shortages.
