The images taken this month show the build-up of troops and military equipment along Ethiopia’s border with Eritrea, backing Prime Minister Abiy Ahmed against the Tigray People’s Liberation Front (TPLF), the group that controls the region. These first images were taken from the northwestern town of Sheraro, which had been held by Tigrayan troops. “We have been monitoring the movements of Eritrean troops across the border. The presence of Eritrean troops in Ethiopia only complicates matters and exacerbates an already tragic situation,” said Mike Hammer. Western Tigray has been under the control of Eritrean, Ethiopian and Amhara Special Forces, as well as the Amhara militia Fano group, since the conflict began in late 2020.
