BackgroundThe use of excessive force by security forces in response to peaceful protests is a long-standing problem in Ethiopia. During Prime Minister Abiy’s first year, there have been fewer protests, and most protests that did take place occurred without excessive force being used by security forces. Prime Minister Abiy should publicly reaffirm that people have the right to peacefully protest. Appropriate training should be given for all security forces involved in crowd control, including regional and local security forces.
