Ethiopia's Prime Minister Abiy Ahmed, the Nobel Peace Prize laureate of 2019, has ordered a military offensive against minority forces in the northern Tigray region. It claimed that forces loyal to the regional government of ethnic Tigray attacked a military base on the previous day. The central government declared a state of emergency in the northern region where telephone and Internet services have been shut down. The minority Tigray had held most of the political power until then. Abiy won the 2019 Nobel Peace Prize for ending a long-time conflict with neighboring Eritrea, and promoting democracy in his country.
