Ethiopia’s annual inflation rate fell to 9.7 percent in December, down from 17.0 percent a year earlier, according to the Ethiopian Statistical Service (ESS). Consumer prices have been easing throughout 2025, with annual inflation at 10.9 percent in November, the lowest level since early 2019. Food and non-alcoholic beverages, which account for 53.5 percent of the consumer basket, recorded year-on-year inflation of 9.8 percent. Housing, water, electricity, and fuel prices rose by 1.9 percent. During 2023 and early 2024, annual inflation exceeded 30 percent, reflecting supply constraints, currency pressures, and global commodity price increases.
