Gareth Southgate’s side needed a win at Wembley to top the group and Raheem Sterling’s header from close range in the first half was enough to secure a 1-0 victory. Scotland, meanwhile, needed a victory to secure their place in the last 16 and were given hope when Callum McGregor’s goal in the first half cancelled out Nikola Vlasic’s opener at Hampden Park. Croatia’s win secured them second place in Group D, while Czech Republic are also through to the knockout phase with their third-placed finish. Different players are needed for different games and those two that came in were massive and did what they needed to do.
