BRUSSELS, BELGIUM - MARCH 21: British Prime Minister Theresa May speaks to the media at the end of the first of a two-day summit of European Union leaders on March 21, 2019 in Brussels, Belgium. Leaders will discuss May’s request for an extension of the deadline for the United Kingdom’s departure from the EU, or Brexit. European Council President Donald Tusk said yesterday that he can see member states agreeing to a short extension beyond March 29, though he has coupled an extension to the British Parliament passing Theresa May’s Brexit agreement first. Westminster has twice rejected Theresa May’s agreed Brexit deal, and Brussels has rejected any attempt to renegotiate. Prime Minister Theresa May’s lamentable domestic performance this week, when she seemed to have capitulated to the “no deal” zealots within her parliamentary party, left Europe with little choice but to seize some control of the situation.
