Ex-pat American hopeful protests will lead to change

American-born Geraldine resident Mark Bourassa hopes the violent protests in his homeland over the death of George Floyd at the hands of police will "awaken" change. Minneapolis resident Floyd died from asphyxiation while handcuffed and lying face down on the ground, a police officer kneeling on his neck. He said his own parents disliked native Americans and were overtly racist about coloured and black people. Where they lived, there were few African-Americans but a number of Native Americans, he said. He draws parallels between Native Americans in the USA, and Maori in New Zealand.
