Look under the bonnet and you’re spoilt for choice. What didn’t go wrong with Britain’s new car sales last year? Registrations down for the third year running, falling 2.4 per cent to 2.3 million. No wonder the Society of Motor Manufacturers and Traders found “multiple factors” to worry about, not least “weak business and consumer confidence”, spliced with “general political and economic instability”. But probably not for the carmakers, because they face an even bigger challenge: the stuff coming out of their exhausts.
