A new exhibition at Atlanta’s High Museum of Art, “With Drawn Arms: Glenn Kaino and Tommie Smith,” seeks to forge a connection between that protest on Oct. 16, 1968, and the present. The pair were sent home from the games in Mexico City for their podium protest and faced vilification back home. Kaino, who said he’s interested in using art to instigate positive social change, had a photo of Smith’s protest taped to his computer in his studio. The centerpiece of the exhibition, “Bridge,” represents a path leading from Smith’s protest to the present, Kaino said. ——If You Go…WITH DRAWN ARMS: GLENN KAINO AND TOMMIE SMITH: Sept. 29-Jan. 6, High Museum of Art, 1280 Peachtree St. NE, Atlanta; http://www.high.org, 404-733-5000.
