How to scale back spending on the Pandemic Unemployment Payment (PUP), which up to the middle of last month accounted for almost €4bn, will be pivotal to the success of their plans. Earlier this year, it signalled again that the rules would remain suspended for a further year in 2022. Managing our way out of the pandemic will require every bit as much caution and consideration as did managing our way through it.
