Experience: I was an imam at Guantánamo Bay

A few years later, I was asked to go to Guantánamo Bay. Just after the first anniversary of 9/11, I shipped out to Guantánamo to become the imam there. At Camp Delta, the permanent detainment camp, the prisoners were held individually in cage-like cells made of heavy-duty steel mesh. Although I was cleared of all charges and returned to Fort Lewis, it became clear that I wasn’t trusted. They set up the prison at Guantánamo Bay believing it would be outside the law.
