Pathogenic E. coli that can cause diarrhea can be transmitted through contaminated water or food, or through contact with animals or people. The technology has proven to be extremely valuable in making a link between a food-borne illness and a contaminated food. A lot of progress, however, has been made toward the ambitious goal of being able to quickly trace contaminated produce back to its field of origin. Should consumers wash their pre-washed bags of produce? Then it's critical that consumers wash their cutting boards before using (of course as well as dishes, salad spinners, utensils, and countertops) to avoid cross-contamination between, for example, raw meats and ready-to-eat leafy greens.
