After taking thousands of images of World War II—the destruction, brutality and even the death of his best friend—photographer Tony Vaccaro vowed never to point his lens in battle again. He returned to New York, instead directing it at fashion models, artists and other more life-affirming subjects. On Sept. 22, the Boston Film Festival will screen a U.S. premiere of the documentary “Underfire: The Untold Story of Pfc. Tony Vaccaro,” about his time as both a combat infantryman on the front lines of the war in Europe. The film airs on HBO Nov. 11, the same day the exhibition “Tony Vaccaro: War, Peace, Beauty” opens at a pop-up gallery space at 508 W. 26th St.
