He was given a whole life sentence, reserved for offenders judged to be the most dangerous to society. A jury at the Old Bailey took less than two hours to convict Mair, who had not offered any evidence in his defence. Mrs Cox’s parents, Gordon and Jean Leadbetter, and their daughter, Kim, attended throughout the trial. Mrs Cox’s husband, Brendan, gave a moving speech in tribute to his wife from the witness box after the conviction.
