FDA finds second metal contaminant, chromium, in applesauce sachets

Comment on this story Comment Add to your saved stories SaveFederal investigators have discovered a second contaminant in the recalled applesauce pouches – the naturally occurring metal chromium, which in certain forms can cause a number of adverse health effects. The FDA has reported finding exceptionally high levels of lead in cinnamon samples from the Ecuador plant where the pouches were made. Chromium is an essential mineral found in foods and dietary supplements, but in one form — called chromium-6 — it can cause harm. The Food and Drug Administration said it has not been able to determine the specific form of chromium found in cinnamon applesauce sachets or whether it poses a health hazard. “The exact form of chromium in the recalled applesauce products is unclear,” the agency said.
