This means families who continued to use gas would have any increase to their bill covered by the payment - but those who switched to cheaper green energy could benefit from the difference in price. A spokesperson for the Department for Business, Energy and Industrial Strategy said: "This government is determined to keep bills low. Ministers are also looking at proposals to scrap gas boilers from 2025 under plans to tackle climate change. Experts have called on the government to give poorer households free heat pumps if the plans to axe gas boilers go ahead.
