Families of Mitiga detainees protest in Tripoli over release orders

Families of detainees held at the Mitiga Reform and Rehabilitation Institution in Tripoli staged a protest on Sunday outside the offices of the attorney general and the Presidential Council, calling for the implementation of court-ordered releases and respect for their relatives’ legal rights. The demonstrators urged authorities to enforce release orders issued by both civilian and military courts, speed up legal proceedings and ensure detainees are brought before prosecutors and courts within legally mandated timeframes. Some participants also voiced concern over reports that several detainees had begun a hunger strike in protest at alleged ill-treatment, and called for regular family visits and humane conditions inside the facility. The National Institution for Human Rights in Libya said in a statement on Facebook that it supported the families’ demands, urging the Supreme Judicial Council, the justice ministry and the judicial police to implement court rulings and ensure detainees receive healthcare, adequate food and access to legal communication with relatives and lawyers.
