The federal government will consider using the $400 million Atlantic Fisheries Fund and an innovation prize to develop new fishing gear or technology to help protect North Atlantic right whales in the Gulf of St. Lawrence. At least 16 North Atlantic right whales died in Canadian and U.S. waters this past summer. Fisheries and Oceans Canada estimates there are only about 450 North Atlantic right whales left in the world. "There is no magic bullet to solve the effects of human activities on North Atlantic right whales. Sixteen North Atlantic right whales have been found dead in both Canadian and U.S. waters this past summer.
