Fee claims fuel Renault-Nissan row

Rachida Dati, a French politician, was hired to provide legal advice to Renault-Nissan BV, but Nissan said it had no knowledge of €600,000 in fees she is said to have been paid DAVID BEBBER FOR THE TIMESRenault’s alliance with Nissan is under increased strain amid claims that the French carmaker used its Japanese partner’s money to hire prominent Parisian politicians and consultants. Among those taken on by Renault-Nissan BV, the Dutch structure that co-ordinates their alliance, was Rachida Dati, a centre-right MEP and former justice minister. Ms Dati, 53, who announced plans to run for mayor of Paris this week, is reported to have been paid €600,000 in lawyer’s fees between 2010 and 2012 without the knowlege of Japanese executives. A spokesman for Nissan said it had no information about payments to Ms Dati even though it contributed to half of Renault-Nissan’s budget. The disclosure looks certain to heighten Nissan’s suspicion that it has been taken for granted by French executives.
