A Fianna Fáil Senator has called on social media companies to take “responsibility for their actions” after a Sinn Féin member in Wexford resigned from the party after sending “nasty” tweets from a private Twitter account. Senator Malcolm Byrne was one of the public figures targeted in a number of tweets sent from the @peeoneill Twitter account, which was revealed to be that of a prominent Sinn Féin member in Wexford, Paul Heffernan. The Twitter account has since been deleted and Sinn Féin has accepted Mr Heffernan’s resignation from the party, the Irish Times reports.
