First Lady commits to promote child healthFirst Lady Margaret Kenyatta (pictured) has said she will continue working towards better healthcare for children. Mrs Kenyatta lauded humanitarian organisation Save the Children for its work in the most marginalised and deprived areas in Kenya amplifying the voices of children. The First Lady said mothers who suffer from malnutrition are also at higher risk of premature births. In her speech, read by Health Chief Administrative Secretary Dr Rashid Aman, Cabinet Secretary Sicily Kariuki said according to the Kenya Demographic Health Survey, the country’s Under Five mortality rate reduced from 74 per 1,000 live births in 2008 to 52 per 1,000 live births in 2014. “The progress in reducing the neonatal mortality rate has been slower from 31 per 1,000 live births in 2008 to the current rate of 22 per 1,000 live births in 2014,” Ms Kariuki said.
