One person has been taken to Hawke's Bay Hospital with serious injuries after the incident, a St John spokeswoman said. Witnesses at the scene told Hawke's Bay Today the man had been shot by police, but police declined to comment. The incident was near Flaxmere Primary School, which was placed in lockdown about 2.15pm.
